The Research and Development Project

Heineken again approached Enterprise Tondelli for an in package pasteurising solution for their R&D plant. The objective was to integrate a tunnel pasteurising solution into their existing glass bottling line with a throughput of 1000bph; delivering a consistent number of PU’s to the filled bottles.

Tunnel Pasteurisation Solution

With close cooperation between Heineken and Enterprise a technically robust solution was developed. The pasteuriser is a six section machine built in AISI316L grade stainless steel. The machine is adapted to allow for ‘boil out’ in all zones. The control is by a Siemens S7 PLC with a large 19” HMI for good visualisation of all parts of the machine. Shown on the graphical representation of the machine are zone temperatures, set points, operating parameters, pumps status, levels, alarms, etc. The machine is fitted with a secure connection to the manufacturer Bigtem for remote support.

The quality parts included in the manufacture include Endress + Hauser, Siemens, SEW, Rexnord, Lowara, Spirax Sarco & Burkett.

Initially two recipes were commissioned for different products with up to 6 bottle shapes being run.

Significant maintenance saving features include quick release spray nozzles allowing quick swap out. To conserve energy and to provide consistent operation the hot tanks are insulated on the sides and top.

The machine infeed and outfeeds are fitted with live edge transfers for maximum bottle stability.

Safety is of paramount importance and to this end there is an access stairway to the top of the machine with a perimetral anti-fall hand rail on all sides. Hot surfaces are guarded or insulated and there are safeties on the utilities pipework.

The Project Team

Jan Pieter van Kempen, manager of the R&D facility said “We knew that it was difficult to find a tunnel pasteuriser of this small size. That’s why we asked Enterprise Tondelli for this. We are very happy with the result; a professional tunnel pasteuriser that increased our capabilities and makes the work of the operators easier.”
